Every day, seven young people aged 13-24 hear the words “you have cancer”. They will each need specialised nursing care and support to get them through the toughest times they may have faced. Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to meeting this vital need.
Teenagers and young adults with cancer are particularly at risk from the coronavirus outbreak. Over the past few months, Teenage Cancer Trust has rapidly adapted to meet this challenge.
A word from Teenage Cancer Trust...
When fear and isolation feel unstoppable, young people facing cancer need dedicated nursing and support to get through it.
Coronavirus has hit many young people with cancer hard, making them increasingly isolated, affecting their mental health and reducing their access to support services.
We’re doing everything we can to adapt. We’re keeping young people with cancer connected – with our specialist nurses, our youth support teams, and each other. We’re making sure young people still get one-to-one emotional support with regular texts, video chats and virtual groups. And we’re still getting young people through the toughest time of their lives, every day.
The impact of this crisis will be felt for a long time. Young people with cancer could have long-term effects on their mental health and emotional wellbeing, as a result of dealing with extreme isolation and disrupted support.
We’re concerned about possible delays to diagnosis of new cancer cases, as new referrals from GPs have been significantly lower during the pandemic.
Those delays in referral could make treatment longer or more complex, or even have an impact on young people’s survival.
Whatever the crisis, we won’t stop – can’t stop – being there for young people with cancer.
