Before we get started, does the Mercedes AMG GT look familiar? It should, because its predecessor is the official safety car for Formula 1 and is usually seen leading a pack of the world’s best race cars to the starting grid every Sunday afternoon.
However, before this new Mercedes model ever takes to an F1 track, we’ve got one of the first examples of the AMG GT up for grabs. Better yet, it comes in lavish Premium Plus specification, and is worth over £160,000.
The Mercedes AMG is a sports car with two personalities. On the one hand, it’s been developed by AMG – Mercedes’ performance division – so it boasts a hand-built 585PS V8, trick anti-roll suspension, rear-axle steering and active aerodynamics.
On the other, it’s also a Mercedes, so the switchable driver modes quieten the exhaust, soften the suspension, use the clever rear-steer to aid parking, and turn this AMG GT into a true grand tourer. Add in an interior featuring Nappa leather and Mercedes’ high-tech MBUX infotainment system – including the stunning central touchscreen – and you’ve got a superb daily driver.
That’s the big picture stuff, so let’s delve into the minutiae. Start with the outside, and it’s the design of the AMG GT that’ll get your attention – think beautiful GT proportions, with a long bonnet and short overhangs. There’s delectable detailing here too, like the intricate 21-inch forged wheels, the yellow-painted brake calipers that nestle behind them, plus the pop-out door handles and the pop-up active rear wing.
No less attention is paid to what you can’t see. The engine is special, a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, built from start to finish by just one AMG engineer. Their name is even inscribed on top of it, so you know exactly who’s responsible for the fulsome 585PS and 800Nm. Which is enough for 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds…
Step inside and it’s rather wonderful too. The interior is trimmed in black Nappa leather, there’s a fantastic Burmester sound system, and everything from the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity to the 64-colour configurable ambient lighting is controlled via the MBUX 11.9-inch portrait touchscreen.
And while it is a sports car, it is a sports car created to be driven every day. The gearbox is an automatic, with a paddle-shift manual override only when you want. There’s four-wheel drive as well, plus four seats, with those up front treated to heated, ventilated and massage functionality. A front-axle lift system raises the car’s nose over speed bumps; an airplane-style head-up display projects vital info onto the windscreen; 360-degree cameras aid parking; and on and on the list goes…
