On 17th July, Umer H from Bradford became the latest winner of our £1,000 Weekly Cash Draw. We caught up with Umer to find out how it feels to win.
How do you feel about winning £1,000 in cash?
Thank you very much! I was just in the barber’s and I saw your text message then checked my email. It was a really pleasant surprise. I was really surprised. It was a good weekend because I’d just come up to Bradford from London. It’s the first time I’ve seen my family in six months. So, to have that and then to get this good news. It was a really nice surprise.
How did you hear about The Omaze Million Pound House Draw?
I saw the draw on Instagram and that there was a charity linked to it.
What tempted you to enter?
I thought, this is quite a good concept, where it gives someone a little bit of fun but then it’s donating and you have the chance to win something so I thought, I’ll buy a ticket or two. It’s going to a good cause and every week I might win something. You never know. And then I did! I’ve told my family about it and they all said, ‘how do I buy a ticket?’ So, I think they’re all going to buy a ticket when they get home from work.
That’s great to hear. You mentioned the link to the charity. Had you heard of Teenage Cancer Trust before?
No, I hadn’t. But when I entered the draw I did some research on it and now I really support the cause and that’s what is so good, I wouldn’t have known about them if it wasn’t for Omaze so I think it’s so good that you link the charity element to it and you raise the profile of the charity.
What would it mean to you to win the Million Pound House?
It’s one of those things that if it happens it would be a really great thing. I think I would rent it and turn it into a business. To be honest, my focus was never on the million pound house, it was the idea of winning all these extra prizes week on week. But me and my wife were planning to move back north at some point so you never know. It might be a really great place to move to.
So, how are you going to spend the £1,000?
I have two small cousins and I was asking them about school and they were saying that school has not been so great because of Covid. I had this idea that I was going to start a little project with them. They’re only 12 and 13. The idea is that I source them a product and then I’ll teach them some business skills and they can try to promote the product and sell it to make a profit. I was going to do this with my own money. But now that I’ve won this I can fund it. I want to make them realise that even though they are young, they have a lot of technology that I never had growing up. Kids of today are in an amazing time in history. I want to show them that they can do it. Plus, they are brother and sister so they will probably get on a bit better too. Even if they don’t make money from it the journey will be fulfilling. The kids are a lot more savvy these days with social media. So, I’ll spend half the money on that and the other half I’ll put towards my new social enterprise, Stay Sound Safe. Our mission is that we want to prevent hearing loss by raising awareness and providing customised and non- customised ear protection for people who go to concerts, working from home for focus…anywhere where there’s a noisy environment that could damage your hearing over a prolonged period of time. It’s not about the money, it’s just about raising awareness. For every sale, we’re going to donate a pair of earplugs to somewhere where it’s needed. Pair for a pair!
I love the fact that the winnings are going straight back into generating more goodwill and helping others.
Thanks very much. Just like Omaze, it’s such a simple concept but it could really help people.
