Who are the RNLI?

The charities we work with are a huge part of the reason we here at Omaze do what we do.

So when we get the opportunity to forge a new partnership, with a charity that’s been saving lives at sea for nearly 200 years, it’s safe to say we get pretty excited.

That’s right, this summer we’re partnering with the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (the RNLI) for the first time ever in the Omaze Million Pound House Draw, Norfolk.

Since the charity launched its first lifeboat in 1824, the RNLI has saved more than 144,000 lives at sea, bringing those in trouble home to their families.

In fact, in 2022 alone the RNLI lifeboats and lifeguards saved the lives of 506 people, covering 19,000 miles of coastline across the UK and Ireland.

Every 22 minutes an RNLI volunteer launches to save someone. But powered primarily by kind donations, every penny counts when it comes to providing these brave volunteers with everything they need, to bring themselves, and those in trouble at sea, home to safety.

RNLI lifesavers work in various ways to fulfil their vision of saving everyone:

  • Lifeboat crews— in 2022, there were 9,312 lifeboats launched, with 389 lives saved quickly, safely and effectively by volunteer crews, aiding a further 16,476 people along the way.
  • Lifeguards— in 2022, RNLI lifeguards attended 18,897 incidents, aiding 23,204 people and saving 117 lives.

“We are excited to be partnering with Omaze for the first time on the Omaze Million Pound House Draw, Norfolk. For nearly 200 years the RNLI has been saving lives at sea. Our incredible volunteers, lifeboat crews and lifeguards have been rescuing those in trouble in the water and spreading vital water safety messages. All of the kit, training and equipment they use is only possible as a result of the donations we receive.

Sadly, every year people are still drowning. We are determined to save everyone and prevent these tragedies from happening. The Norfolk House Draw will raise vital funds to help us do this and continue our lifesaving work.”

Mark Dowie, Chief Executive at The RNLI
